Skye-based Company make Smarta 100
Skye-based company Highland Wi-Fi Ltd has been named as one of the top 100 smartest small businesses in Britain.
The local company installs broadband wireless internet access services across the Highlands. It has been in operation since August 2009 and currently manages hotspot areas in Dunvegan, Portree, Gairloch and Dornoch with sites at Uig and Arisaig coming online for the forthcoming season. Services are aimed at independent campsites, hostels and hotels where they offer pay-as-you-go internet access that can be used at all Highland Hotspot locations. Local companies can advertise on this network to promote their business to visitors using the Highland Hotspots.
Calum MacDonald, Technical Manager at Highland Wi-Fi Ltd said;
“We are delighted to receive this accolade considering the number of businesses in the UK and the highly successful judging panel. Our aim is to create a large wireless network operating throughout the Highlands.”
Highland Wi-Fi Ltd is the sole company in the Highlands and one of only four companies in Scotland that have received the ultimate business accolade of making it onto the Smarta 100 list. The Smarta 100 winners are a selection of small enterprising businesses picked by a panel of judges including Deborah Meaden and Bebo Founder Michael Birch.

Smarta 100 - Network Vote Winners
Skye Company No.1 in UK
In a remarkable achievement of determination, creative thinking and drive, a small Skye-based start-up company, Highland Wi-Fi Ltd has just been voted the No.1 Small Business in the UK by Smarta100. The Smarta panel of highly respected judges, including Deborah Meaden of Dragons’ Den fame and Bebo Founder Michael Birch, managed and supervised the competition where the winner was chosen by popular vote from the Smarta list of UK’s top 100 small businesses. Highland Wi-Fi fought off the cream of enterprising entrepreneurs across the width and breadth of the Britain to win the fiercely contested competition.
On receiving the accolade, Calum MacDonald, co-founder and Technical Manager of Highland Wi-Fi said, “We’re absolutely delighted to receive this award – it means a great deal to the whole team, who have put in so much effort over the last few months. Our aim to create an extensive, efficient wireless network operating throughout the Highlands and beyond, is gradually becoming a reality and this award is recognition that we’re on course to deliver our promise. Everyone should have the capability to surf the internet, send emails or watch a live football match, no matter where they are.”
Highland Wi-Fi has been in operation since August 2009 and currently manages various hotspot areas in Dunvegan, Portree, Gairloch, Dornoch, Uig and Arisaig. Services are aimed at hotels, hostels, independent campsites and caravan parks, giving them the opportunity to offer pay-as-you-go internet access that can be used at all Highland Hotspot locations. Local Councils or businesses can also utilise the network to announce up-coming events, provide useful information, or promote their service to visitors.
